Earthquake!

I just love it when I get woke up in the middle of the night.

This time the good ol' New Madrid Fault has decided to wake up and say, "look at what I can do".

I'm not sure yet how strong it was, but I would guess 4.3-4.7 or so. It was a good shake, rattle and roll.

So, anyway. There was an earthquake and it shook me awake. Now, do I go back to sleep for two hours?

EDIT

Wow... 5.4 preliminary.

We had thunder and lightening from it. And it wasn't the New Madrid fault. It was the Wabash fault up in Illinois. Strange. West Salem, Illinois for the epicenter. 160 miles or so away.
  • Cool! 5.4 isn't that big, but it's respectable when you're not used to them. Although the thunder and lightening were not related, :-).

ETA - did you go to the USGS Did You Feel It map? here

Ended up being a 5.2. And I went there before I went back to bed. :-)

Had my earthquake monitor up on the computer waiting for it to show up.

The 'thunder' was actually more like a sonic boom that came with the earthquake. We go in waves in this area having sonic booms that are smallish earthquakes. We had one sonic boom about three years ago that scared me half to death. I was just sitting at my desk in my room and then there was this extremely loud BOOM followed by a few seconds of everything shaking. Me and several in the apartments around me all went outside expecting to see a car that backfired or something, but there wasn't.

The lightning, I didn't see any, but the local station weather guy said he did and couldn't figure it out because there was nothing on the radar. So don't know about that one.
