Summary: Gibbs was not a talkative man. He let his actions speak louder than words.

No matter how much he felt it within his heart and his entire being, he was never able to say those three little words to either of them. Shannon never asked him, even with a look. She just smiled, kissed him and said, “I know.” She had understood without being told that he was unable to voice his feelings. With Tony, it was harder. Tony had never had anyone say the words to him and mean them. So it was a challenge to show Tony every day what he felt for him even if he couldn’t say those three words.

He knew that he had fallen for DiNozzo the day he caught himself watching the younger agent sleep at his desk in the middle of long and hard case. The last time he had been so enthralled by a sleeping person it had been Shannon. Anytime he saw her curled up with her eyes closed, he would watch over her, not missing one breath. Kelly had known his secret with Shannon because she would curl up and watch her too. It was the same with Tony. He made sure no one ever caught him looking at Tony on those occasions.

He liked to be held. It was a closely guarded secret and the only person he had ever told had been his mother. Somehow, only weeks into their relationship, Shannon had discovered his secret without him ever saying a word. At seemingly random times, she would reach over and pull him into a tight embrace. After her, he figured he would never have that again. Then, just weeks into their “not a” relationship, Tony starting pulling him into half hugs. His personal favorite was when Tony would come up behind him in the basement and pull him against his chest.

Rule 50. He had told Kate there were about fifty rules, but he never voiced number fifty out loud. Shannon had kept her own set of rules that always made him smile to think of them. Over the years, he had made his own to keep himself and those he cared for safe. However, Rule 50 was a special one and it was also one he had broken many times. Keep the ones you love safe. He had failed with Shannon and Kelly. He had failed with Kate. He had failed with so many others. He wouldn’t fail with Tony.

“Thank you,” had never really been part of his vocabulary. It seemed pointless to thank the people around you day in and day out for doing things they already knew you were grateful for. He could have told Shannon hundreds of times, “Thank you for loving me,” or “Thank you for giving me Kelly,” but he never did. With Tony, a pat to the head went so much further than words ever could. Tony didn’t need thanks for doing the job he was trained to do. But after Tony saved him, he realized it wasn’t too late to say, “Thanks.”
  • What about that Highlander fic you mooted awhile back? That sounded really cool!

And yeah, I'm cringing a bit in advance re tonight's ep - hopefully it'll be good but S6 so far doesn't make me very optimistic on that score. Less comic relief Tony would be nice - more substance and more team lurve, and a sense that Gibbs is part of the team and not a grumpy old curmudgeon who puts his old friends ahead of his current team the whole time. Grrr.
    • I need to go back to the Highlander one... I tried to start writing Tony's back story the night the ice storm hit, but the falling branches/trees/power lines did not make for good concentration. That story is going to be Tony having a flashback as Kate asks him how he got into NCIS and he responded with, "I smiled."

Writing the historical aspect takes a little work though because I want it to be accurate and not seem wrong when reading.

I'm with you on S6. If tonight doesn't deliver I have to hope the horse promo pics with Tony and Gibbs for South by Southwest do deliver.
      • I am looking forward to the horse ep *g*. Surely it can't fail? I mean, just Tony and Gibbs having screen time together and there being *horses*!!!!

And I look forward to seeing what you do with the Highlander fic. I love the idea of a very old Tony teaching a young (by comparative standards!) Gibbs how to swordfight *g*.
        • Horses! Gibbs! Tony! All together! Yay! Failing is not an option.

I'm going to have to consult my brother and sister for the sword portions of the fic... they were the fencers in the family.

I also have plans for Gibbs and Tony's conversations into Gibbs family and such. Someone gave me the idea that Shannon was raped as the explanation of Gibbs not being able to father children. I'm not sure I want to go that route, but I'll have to figure something out for Kelly.

I can also imagine that the first time Gibbs has to leave his current life behind, it will be extremely hard on him. Tony will have to be there for him and I kinda think I might have them have their "gay" moment then. In this verse, I don't see them doing a full out relationship beyond a "brother in arms" kind of thing. However, at some point, I see them hooking up for some experimentation and perhaps going to each other for stress relief over the years because they can have something that last with each other even if they can't have a lasting relationship with mortals that eventually die.
    • SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEE-EEEEEEEEEE-EEEEEEEEEEEE-EEEEE*cough*EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Our NCIS is back with a vengeance... that's all I have to say until you watch.
      • I've been reading tons of good stuff about it and can't wait! I'll get to see it tomorrow night probably when it's been downloaded and sent to me by my US TV pusher *g*.
