Summary: Gibbs was not a talkative man. He let his actions speak louder than words.

No matter how much he felt it within his heart and his entire being, he was never able to say those three little words to either of them. Shannon never asked him, even with a look. She just smiled, kissed him and said, “I know.” She had understood without being told that he was unable to voice his feelings. With Tony, it was harder. Tony had never had anyone say the words to him and mean them. So it was a challenge to show Tony every day what he felt for him even if he couldn’t say those three words.

He knew that he had fallen for DiNozzo the day he caught himself watching the younger agent sleep at his desk in the middle of long and hard case. The last time he had been so enthralled by a sleeping person it had been Shannon. Anytime he saw her curled up with her eyes closed, he would watch over her, not missing one breath. Kelly had known his secret with Shannon because she would curl up and watch her too. It was the same with Tony. He made sure no one ever caught him looking at Tony on those occasions.

He liked to be held. It was a closely guarded secret and the only person he had ever told had been his mother. Somehow, only weeks into their relationship, Shannon had discovered his secret without him ever saying a word. At seemingly random times, she would reach over and pull him into a tight embrace. After her, he figured he would never have that again. Then, just weeks into their “not a” relationship, Tony starting pulling him into half hugs. His personal favorite was when Tony would come up behind him in the basement and pull him against his chest.

Rule 50. He had told Kate there were about fifty rules, but he never voiced number fifty out loud. Shannon had kept her own set of rules that always made him smile to think of them. Over the years, he had made his own to keep himself and those he cared for safe. However, Rule 50 was a special one and it was also one he had broken many times. Keep the ones you love safe. He had failed with Shannon and Kelly. He had failed with Kate. He had failed with so many others. He wouldn’t fail with Tony.

“Thank you,” had never really been part of his vocabulary. It seemed pointless to thank the people around you day in and day out for doing things they already knew you were grateful for. He could have told Shannon hundreds of times, “Thank you for loving me,” or “Thank you for giving me Kelly,” but he never did. With Tony, a pat to the head went so much further than words ever could. Tony didn’t need thanks for doing the job he was trained to do. But after Tony saved him, he realized it wasn’t too late to say, “Thanks.”
  • Fantastic! Loved it

    Loved this fic!

  • Oh I am so totally in a happy tizzy right now. As bittersweet and reflective of a fic that you wrote I love it. Yay! And your characterizations were spot on cuddly cute...just like I love.

And am I ever happy that I sat down and took the time to prompt someone :)
  • Wonderful
  • Very poignant
  • Very lovely. I like the clean, to-the-point feeling of these drabbles, where each word feels important.
    • Drabbles are sometimes harder to do than longer fic. That 100 word limit make you consider every word down to the "and" "a" and "the's".

      :-)
      • I know, you can't waste words. It tends to make for more powerful fics, as shown above :)
        • *smiles*

I'm working on the 2nd one from prompts now... It will be called "Deathly Wake-Up Call" and is a crossover with Buffy... It will be a comedy of sorts actually. And doing comedy in 100 word groups is a little hard too. Especially when you kill a character off... :-)
          • Ohh, Buffy crossover ^^ I haven't written Buffy in years (it was the fandom I started writing fics for), although I'll be doing a little nod to it in the fic I'm currently posting. Looking forward to your drabbles, then :)
            • Well... I have one of the five drabbles left for this next one and it's a little more angsty than I originally intended.. huh...

I've been reading (and loving) your fic with the Raft of the Medusa. I'm withholding my comments on it until I can say something more than: "Where is the REST???!!!!!!!!!!!"

              ;-)

Buffy crossovers is the first fandom I really got into writing (considering I'm a mod at TTH, I guess that shows). Highlander was the first one I read fanfic for.

I have my Navy Watcher series (Tony/Xander) already with BtVS/NCIS but this will be outside of that. :-)
              • *g* I guess glad you're enjoying it, then? Feel free to post "Where is the rest?" if you want to ;) Reviews are fun. Let's me know people are actually reading it.

The first fandom I ever read fanfic in was Sailor Moon. Although at the time I didn't know what fanfic was, and I thought it was some sort of official continuation ^^

Never was the biggest fan of Xander, and since I'm not particularly fond of Angel either, I never slashed anyone in that fandom. I wrote *gasp* het then. I guess crossovers works better then :)
                • I need to review... lately I haven't had time to review because of the whole lack of internet and using the work computer for brief spurts to catch up on things. Since the ice storm hit internet access has been non-existent at home. :-(

But I'm slowly getting it back!

Xander was my favorite from Buffy. He's the one I find easiest to write. I usually stick with Xander, Faith, Dawn and Tara for writing. I read slash but didn't write slash until I did Tony and Xander. I had Xander as my favorite. Then Tony came along and was squabbling over the pedestal with Xander. So I told them they had to kiss and share the pedestal. :-)

Of course, I think Tony finally kicked Xander off the pedestal and only let's him back on for visits.
  • I always love the way you write these types of fics. Just fitting in so much poignancy into these snapshots. Your insight into Gibbs's psyche is spot on - I particularly loved the Rule number 50 one because I think that's at the heart of Gibbs's inability to let people in. He so wants to keep them safe but has failed and it hurts him so much. I love that Tony has picked up on the holding him thing. I love the idea that Gibbs needs/wants/loves that so much and that Tony knows. Beautiful!
    • I'm glad you liked Rule 50, that was the hardest one to do. I don't think Gibbs wanted to let me in on the secret of the rule. You are right about Gibbs. If he holds people at arms length, he thinks he won't be hurt like he was when he lost Shannon and Kelly... but it doesn't work when the people you are shutting out refuse to be shut out.

Tony hugging Gibbs was fun to do. I always have this mental image of Tony walking up behind Gibbs and wrapping his arms around the man while Gibbs is standing at the boat. Of course Gibbs would be tense at first, but eventually he would relax.

I'll stick to the shorter one-shots and you do those epics you do so well. :-)
      • I actually rather wish I could stick to shorter one shots *g*. These epics take over my life!

But I'm very glad you are writing these lovely ficlets as they are a nice break for me from my epic.

And I LOVE the image of Tony putting his arms around a skittish Gibbs. I think poor Gibbs actually needs some love but doesn't have a clue how to ask for it.
        • Tony... skittish Gibbs... *sigh*

I'm crossing my fingers for a decent ep tonight, but I'm worried they'll have Tony "overdo" things with being in charge. I really hope they don't, but...

I love writing the short ones... I might give something longer a shot with [livejournal.com profile] triskellion's shifter!verse. We were talking back and forth about her one shot where Shannon and Kelly are still alive and Tony meets Gibbs and I *may* pick it up from her and see what I can do. I'm still thinking on it though.

Us readers are grateful for the epics that take over your life though. They turn out so nice. :-)
          • What about that Highlander fic you mooted awhile back? That sounded really cool!

And yeah, I'm cringing a bit in advance re tonight's ep - hopefully it'll be good but S6 so far doesn't make me very optimistic on that score. Less comic relief Tony would be nice - more substance and more team lurve, and a sense that Gibbs is part of the team and not a grumpy old curmudgeon who puts his old friends ahead of his current team the whole time. Grrr.
            • I need to go back to the Highlander one... I tried to start writing Tony's back story the night the ice storm hit, but the falling branches/trees/power lines did not make for good concentration. That story is going to be Tony having a flashback as Kate asks him how he got into NCIS and he responded with, "I smiled."

Writing the historical aspect takes a little work though because I want it to be accurate and not seem wrong when reading.

I'm with you on S6. If tonight doesn't deliver I have to hope the horse promo pics with Tony and Gibbs for South by Southwest do deliver.
              • I am looking forward to the horse ep *g*. Surely it can't fail? I mean, just Tony and Gibbs having screen time together and there being *horses*!!!!

And I look forward to seeing what you do with the Highlander fic. I love the idea of a very old Tony teaching a young (by comparative standards!) Gibbs how to swordfight *g*.
                • Horses! Gibbs! Tony! All together! Yay! Failing is not an option.

I'm going to have to consult my brother and sister for the sword portions of the fic... they were the fencers in the family.

I also have plans for Gibbs and Tony's conversations into Gibbs family and such. Someone gave me the idea that Shannon was raped as the explanation of Gibbs not being able to father children. I'm not sure I want to go that route, but I'll have to figure something out for Kelly.

I can also imagine that the first time Gibbs has to leave his current life behind, it will be extremely hard on him. Tony will have to be there for him and I kinda think I might have them have their "gay" moment then. In this verse, I don't see them doing a full out relationship beyond a "brother in arms" kind of thing. However, at some point, I see them hooking up for some experimentation and perhaps going to each other for stress relief over the years because they can have something that last with each other even if they can't have a lasting relationship with mortals that eventually die.
            • SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEE-EEEEEEEEEE-EEEEEEEEEEEE-EEEEE*cough*EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Our NCIS is back with a vengeance... that's all I have to say until you watch.
              • I've been reading tons of good stuff about it and can't wait! I'll get to see it tomorrow night probably when it's been downloaded and sent to me by my US TV pusher *g*.
  • Absolutely fabulous! So much said and every word matters! What a great glimpse into Gibbs!
  • dhae_knight_1: My kitten Zasha (Default)
This is so, so wonderful. Perfectly Gibbs - perfectly captured.

I really wish I could write drabbles - but once I put pen to paper (or, more to the point; fingers to keyboard) it just... runs away with me.

So... all hail the drabblers, who gives us wonderful fic in small packages. :-)
    • Thanks! Drabble writing can be hard. Sometimes there's more I want to say but I don't have more words to do it with. However, I've done enough of them now that I've got it pretty much down to where I generally stop +/- one or two words. Today I had one go over by about 15 and was able to go back and cut / rearrange to get it to work.

I'm glad you like my take on Gibbs. Sometimes it is hard to get in his head.

      :-)
  • I really enjoyed these, I wish I could get so much into so few words, they wind up like reports if I try.

    Take care.
    • Thanks!

Drabbles are my thing I think. I have issues trying to do longer fics, but I can make a long fic with lots of little fics strung together...

      :-)
  • Hey, I've just read your set of drabbles and loved them - especially the one about being held :) Thanks for sharing
