Summary: Bourbon, boat, basement, bastard, boss. Each 'b' in his life had a beginning.

The first time he had some, he had picked the lock to his dad's liquor cabinet while he was gone on a hunting trip. He felt a heady rush as he hastily poured the amber liquid into a tall glass on the kitchen counter. He winced when a little sloshed over the edge. Making a note to clean up the evidence later, he carried the glass into the living room and leaned back in the easy chair his dad liked to watch the evening news in. He took a full swig and he soon found himself spitting out the bourbon.

He had started small. LJ, his dad's friend, was always working with wood. LJ had built the counters and shelves in the store and people from the town were always asking him to help fix or make something; a broken fence, a new table, a tree house. He didn't take much interest in what LJ did until his mom died. Since his dad spent all his time in the store after that, LJ started showing him how to make things with the wood. The first project he did on his own under LJ's watchful eyes was a small fishing boat.

Shannon had said it was creepy and wasn't sure if she wanted that room easily accessible with a baby on the way. He had taken one look and thought it was perfect. He loved to spend time with his wife and he was looking forward to spending time with their child. However, there were moments when he just wanted to be away from it; wanted his own space. He had walked through the empty room with its concrete floor and did some careful calculations. It would be perfect. He didn't care what anyone thought about his plans for the basement.

He wasn't sure what to think the first time he heard it. With Shannon, it had been so easy. They had loved each other with such ease. It was hard for him to show any kind of emotions, but Shannon and Kelly had drawn them out of him without batting an eyelash. After they were taken from him, he closed himself off from everyone around him. He wasn't sure what drove him to marry again; the red hair, the need for human contact. It wasn't love. And when she realized that, she slapped his face and called him a bastard.

When Mike left and he took over his first team, it was natural to be called what he had always called Mike. However, it didn't really mean anything to him. Then he met an annoying Baltimore detective who drove himself to the ground and still had a smile on his face afterwards. He had never picked someone for his team, but he found himself packing the kid off to FLETC with the promise of riding his ass hard when he got back. The first time he heard it from Anthony DiNozzo, he felt honored to have the title of boss.

Note: I wrote this after posting my NCIS Word Association poll and realizing how many B's are prominent in Gibbs' life. It's totally not [livejournal.com profile] avamclean's fault. ;-)
