Summary: In just a moment, they connected.
Being with him was like a dream. She had spent her life looking for someone she could be with, someone who would love her the way her father had loved her mother. The day she went to Mr. Gibbs for help, she didn’t expect to find that one person in a million. In actuality, she didn’t know it until she woke up in the hospital and saw his slumped form in the chair between her and Jethro’s beds. She was trying to figure out how to thank him when he opened his eyes and looked right at her. They connected.
Being with her was like dream. Seeing her in the office and the way Gibbs had treated her made him feel protective of her by default. When he reached the sunken car and saw her limp form next to Gibbs, panic set in. The moments between getting both Gibbs and her on the pier and trying desperately to breathe life back into their lungs almost broke his soul. He wanted to collapse when he learned they would live. At the hospital he stood guard over both of them, but found his hand drifting to her soft hair. He felt connected.
Watching them was like a dream. When Kelly died, his chance to see her grow older, marry and start her own family died with her. There would be no boyfriends to vet, no grandchildren, no chances to see his daughter in her happiest moments. But then Anthony DiNozzo had swaggered on to his team and, though he never said it, he felt like he had surrogate son. When Maddie arrived and asked for help, he quickly found a surrogate daughter. Watching them connect the way he had with Shannon all those years before healed the empty place in his heart.
