Hmm... I think I use 'could' when I say that and from an internet search it seems that many Americans do as well. It's probably that whole 'depends on where you live' thing and I'm a country girl so I get a bit of the country twang in my writing.

Now, as to who is saying it, McGee would most like say it correctly (being the Thom E. Gemcity writer that he is) so I'll change it to couldn't. However, had Tony been the one talking I think I would have left it...
