Summary: The light lasted only five seconds, but in those five seconds, everyone changed.
The world didn't end on December 21, 2012, but it changed beyond recognition.
It started with a bright flash that encompassed the entire world. Day or night did not matter as the light traversed everything, even those areas closed off to the outside world. Not one person on the planet was exempt from seeing the flash of light, including the blind.
The light lasted only five seconds, but in those five seconds, everyone changed.
"What the hell just happened?" Gibbs' voice literally echoed through the entirety of NCIS. Those close to him heard it not only vocally but in their thoughts as well. However, it was too soon for them to realize it.
Those further away, including Leon Vance, just shrugged it off as their own thoughts sounding suspiciously like the gruff agent. It wouldn't be until later that the truth was known.
Eager to find an answer for himself and his surly boss, McGee went straight for the computer. It was in that moment, that they learned something was hinky as Abby would say.
When McGee touched the keyboard, his fingers seemingly melted into the keys. Had it not been for the sudden rush of information to his head, McGee would have accused DiNozzo of some type of elaborate prank. Instead, he was struggling to comprehend all the information that was flying through his mind.
It overwhelmed him to the point that he collapsed to the floor, severing his first connection with the computer mind.
"McGee!" was the next thunderous thought that filtered through the building and even beyond its walls.
In that moment, the elevator dinged, signaling the arrival of its sole occupant.
Tony had just returned from a quick lunch run during what was just another boring winter day filled with cold case research. Nothing had warranted their attention for the last two weeks and he knew that the situation would change soon with Christmas fast approaching.
To pass the time, he began to prepare his It's a Wonderful Life viewing in his head, trying to devise a way to get Gibbs to attend for once. Since he didn't have an event in 2001 due to only being at the agency for a few months and the kidnapped child of a general, 2012 marked the tenth anniversary.
With thoughts of having Abby handcuff herself to Gibbs again, Tony was completely unprepared for the sudden flash of light that filled the small elevator car. He closed his eyes to block the brightest but it was still surrounding him. He couldn't escape.
Then it was gone, leaving behind only darkness. Tony sank to the floor, trying to catch his breath. The elevator car was pitch black, not even the emergency lights had kicked on. The strange thing was that the car itself was still moving as if nothing was wrong.
Before he could fully think, the thought burst into his mind, what the hell happened?! He could only snort that his mind chose that moment to sound like Gibbs.
Feeling for his gun, Tony prepared himself for what would happen when the doors opened. He could here the mechanical slide of the doors, but instead of see the bullpen, he was assaulted by a rush of colors that were swirling around every person in the room.
He rubbed at his eyes, but the sight didn't change. He couldn't see faces, skin tones or clothing, but he he instinctively knew which swirl was whom.
He looked in the vicinity of his desk just in time to see the brown swirls of McGee collapse in a heap on the floor. The amazing part was the thin tendrils that stretched out from him, touching every piece of electronic equipment in the office.
He 'saw' Gibbs' shout before he heard it. It was like a blast of blue energy that burst forth from the electric blue swirls that could only be Gibbs. Looking closer at the swirls, he saw varied colors throughout the man's body ranging from the vibrant blues of his head that were almost blinding, to the darkened blues around his heart that were close to black.
"Boss?" he questioned and winced when he heard all shaky his voice was. "I think something happened to us."
He started to walk toward Gibbs only to be stopped by a sharp pain in his leg as he ran into the corner of Ziva's empty desk.
"DiNozzo?" Gibbs gruff question stopped Tony in his tracks.
"Can't see right, Boss," Tony answered as he took a closer look around him to assess what he could and could not see.
"People are all these colors swirling around and..." he paused as he held his hand in front of his face and waggled his fingers. "And me along with anything non-living is like-" he tried to put it to words, "it's like a black and white movie on a crappy tv. Very dull and all the blacks and grays are blurring together. I can see stuff, just not right."
Before Tony could analyze it any further, he felt the strongest surge of emotion he'd ever had. It was an overwhelming since of protection coupled with anger and an unknown source. And at the very bottom of it all was fear. Tony glanced up and noticed the waves of blue emanating from Gibbs.
"Uh, Boss? I think you're doing something..." Tony trailed off as the blue waves stopped immediately. "What the hell?"
"Have no idea, DiNozzo."
Then Tony watched as the blue swirls of Gibbs moved to crouch beside McGee's slowly brightening brown ones.
"I think he's starting to come around, Boss," Tony said thoughtfully just as McGee let out a groan.
"What happened?" McGee questioned. "It was like... It was like I was connected to the computer. But that's not possible. Is it?"
"Seems like anything is possible right now, Tim," Gibbs answered gruffly.
"I would go online and look, Boss, but I don't think it's good idea right now," Tim said as he eyed his keyboard warily.
"I don't think I could read anything if I did it," Tony admitted quietly. "And Ziva picked the wrong week for a vacation."
"Abby!" McGee shouted and all three headed for the elevator ignoring the others around them dealing with their own changes.
When they approached the elevator, Tony hesitated. "Think I'll take the stairs, Boss. Last time I was in there, it didn't go so well."
Gibbs ignored him and just propelled him forward with a hand on his shoulder.
"You'll do fine, DiNozzo," Gibbs said quietly. And Tony watched in awe at the thin blue waves passing into his shoulder from Gibbs' hand.
"Thanks, Boss."
As expected, Abby ran excitedly towards them as soon as they were off the elevator.
"You'll never believe it! Or maybe you will, because I think it went everywhere. The light that is. Everyone is tweeting about it. The entire world was hit from what I can tell."
Gibbs and McGee kept moving into the lab, but Tony stood in shock as he watched Abby's colors. Not that he had much to go on, but so far everyone had one color that varied in shades throughout their body. Abby was different.
Her 'core' color for lack of a better word, was a shimmering yellow. But mixed in the yellow were various colors. The most noticeable were the pure white cross across her back and the small red swirl that was situated around her neck. He was transfixed as it jumped from her neck and skittered across the floor toward him.
"Your tattoos!" Tony finally managed to blurt out when he realized her spider was winding its way up his pants leg.
"Isn't cool?" Abby answered excitedly. "After the light, they just came to life. The spider especially. I think I'll have to name her now. Never did before."
"Can you call her back?" Tony said nervously as the spider perched on his shoulder.
"She's happy there," Abby said with a smile. “I can see what she sees and kinda feel what she feels. It's cool. I'll have to really think about any new tats though."
"What about you guys? I know Gibbs has some kind of mental thing going on. I heard him shout all the way down here twice. And what happened to you Timmy?"
"My fingers melted into the keyboard," McGee said quietly. "It was like I was seeing everything on the internet at once."
"Think about what you can do with that! Find things instantly with no typing."
"Not too sure I want to repeat it anytime soon."
Abby turned her attention to Tony. "What about you mister? You didn't get x-ray vision did you?"
"If only," Tony muttered. "It's my eyes, but... It's like everyone is a color. Even your tattoos."
"You can see auras? Awesome! We'll be like the X-Men or something. Except Gibbs won't be in a wheelchair. And I bet Ducky'll can talk to the dead, or maybe he'll be like the Beast. What about Ziva?"
"Slow down, Abs," Gibbs said as he pulled her into a hug. "The whole world just got upended. It's too soon to be talked about what-ifs."
"No more what ifs, Gibbs," a new voice entered the conversation. "We have a new national crisis- no, make that a world crisis. Word's pouring in that everyone changed, including those behind bars. And the bars holding them can't anymore."
Tony turned and took in the swirling pink of Director Vance and couldn't help but laugh. The pink swirls were dark except for the vibrant hues that extended out from the other man's back in the shape of what Tony could only describe as fairy wings.
"You're pink!" he belted out. "And you have wings!"
"I might have wings, but I'm still your boss, DiNozzo. And what do you mean I'm pink?" Vance asked as he looked down at himself.
"Only got one boss. Isn't that right, Boss?"
"Right," Gibbs said shortly as he turned to regard Vance. "Guess your inner self is pink Leon, if Tony's new eyes are seeing right. Now tell us what's going on out there."
"As everyone knows, at twelve noon central standard time, a flash of light of undetermined origin permeated the entire world. Immediately following, the entire population started to notice chances of a supernatural sort. At this time, speculation ranges from aliens to the Mayan calendar, but there is no scientific evidence for what really occurred.
The changes are not standard. Some range from the small all the way to the extraordinary. However, the government has asked us to urge caution in the coming days as the populace learns to deal with this new way of life.
There have also been numerous escapes from local, state and federal penitentiaries. And it is unknown at this time the nature of the changes in these escapees. Law enforcement around the country is working to try and? keep everyone safe as we deal with the fallout.
We are now going live to our correspondent at the White House for President Obama's speech to the nation.
This is Sydney Lupine for ZNN, signing off," and the woman let out a howl as she shifted into a wolf in front of the camera.

Also, I'm sorry (not) but my first thought with Abby's spider was just how close to the groin was she heading and what was the view like. (:grins evilly™)
And Vance can totally rock the pink and the fairy wings. :-)
Not sure if there will be more... who knows how the muse works.

I have a few little bunnies, but I'm not sure if they'll ever form into something more.
I love these types of stories!
Aura seeing is so cool! And telepathic Gibbs makes so much sense.
Abby's is a little creepy though :p I wonder if it only counts towards tattoos she had at the time and not ones she gets later... could you imagine one getting up while it's being put on her?!
This is awesome, thanks for sharing... I hope there's more!
In my mind, Abby's will affect any permanent tattoo she has on her before and after the light. So any new ink she gets will come to life. She'll have to consider it carefully.
I didn't think about a half finished tattoo trying to run around though. :-)
I hope the muse cooperates too. One of these days I will write a long fic from something.
I'm definitely curious to see more of this, if there is more to be had :)

pink fairy wing Vance -- LOL
And no, you can't leave it there... Wow, it's an amazing concept for our guys.
