In shock...

I received a call from my mom just a little bit ago and apparently lighting hit my dad's work shed around 4am and the fire spread to the house. My parents made it out just fine, but the house is pretty much a loss. They won't know until they start going through things. It's the house I grew up in. And they hadn't seen a sign of the four cats yet (including my cat Abu who is really getting up in years around 16-17), or at least my mom hadn't when she left to go to my grandma's house for a bit.

[livejournal.com profile] cheerfulchaotic, [livejournal.com profile] sister_devora and [livejournal.com profile] pedropadrao... I don't know how fast the family grapevine is traveling, but yeah... :-( I said something must have it out for all the old family houses since granny's family house burned a few years back and now this one. It was almost to 100 year mark.

ETA: One cat survived! Cali... she's Abu's sister and my mom said she was a little worse for wear, but made it. Abu and Cookie did not make it. :-( And they hadn't found the other one, Kitty, yet.

The house will be a loss. They are working to save some things now in case the fire starts back up, including my dad's gun safes. She said their clothes should be salvageable after a good wash or two or more as long as the fire doesn't reignite like it did at a relative's house a few years back.

Oh my god, I'm glad everyone made it out safe! Fires are such destructive things.

OMG, I'm so, so sorry to hear this! *gives a gentle hug*

I'm just relieved to hear your parents are okay! And I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the cats are fine, too.

So sorry, Chick - I hope your family has some place to stay in the mean time. That's a really freaky thing to happen. I'm glad they managed to get out safely and am sure the cats will turn up as well.

Best wishes

OMG hon! I'm so sorry! Many many hugs! I hope that the cats got out just fine and have just gone to ground because of the trauma.

Many many hugs! I'll be keeping you and your family, including the cats) in my thoughts!

[identity profile] kaylashay.livejournal.com 2010-08-21 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
thanks... yeah... my great-uncle/aunt lost one of the other family homes a couple years ago from a fire that started with a hair dryer. It burned completely to the ground.

[identity profile] kaylashay.livejournal.com 2010-08-21 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
thanks.

[identity profile] kaylashay.livejournal.com 2010-08-21 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
thanks. I'm kinda in the 'random thoughts of what was lost' phase now I think. I'll be going over there later today.

[identity profile] kaylashay.livejournal.com 2010-08-21 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
thanks. They'll be able to stay at my mom's house (which they actually own) or my dad's brother's house which is just up the hill from their place. So they will be good in that aspect. And they had insurance on the house (knowing my dad, good insurance). So that's a plus as well. I'm now curious how well my dad's two gun safes faired because he kept all the pertinent stuff there... along with the guns. And... Oh... I'm glad I have my birth certificate now.

[identity profile] kaylashay.livejournal.com 2010-08-21 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
thanks.

They'll have a place to stay either with my uncle who lives next door or my grandma's who's house they actually own. So that will be good.

I plan to go over there this afternoon. It's about a 45 minute drive for me.

[identity profile] kaylashay.livejournal.com 2010-08-21 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
thanks... my mom left the front door open as they were getting in hopes they'd find a way out... but... well...

I'll be going over there later today.

Sweetie I am so sorry. I'm glad your folks made it out ok.

The same thing happened to my grandparents a few years ago, they were okay but lost everything. My aunt sent a message along to all of the family to dig up photos and make copies. Anything with them and their relatives, children, and grandchildren and asked that they be labeled. She made albums for them.

It helped my grandparents get back some of their memories. Maybe you guys can do something like that.

*hugs* to you guys and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I'm so sorry they didn't all survive! Hugs! The one who is MIA may be hiding somewhere! Try to have hope!

I'm so sorry for your losses :( hugs!

I am so sorry to hear about your parents house fire. I am also very sorry to hear about your cats :( *Big Hugs* If there is anything I can do, please let me know... You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Memory wise, we'll be relatively good on that front. Thanks to the computer age, we have many digital copies of all the photos floating around. There's one picture I may have lost that I will always miss... my 'child of the 80s' pic that had me wearing a star wars shirt with strawberry shortcake pants, pom-pom's in my hands, heart shaped sunglasses, velcro shoes, and my brother and sister in the background playing atari. I'm not sure where that picture was anymore.

But they survived, so that's the good thing.

thanks... going to have so see what is going to happen next...

I'm so sorry to hear about the cats, esp. Abu. Here's hoping that Kitty is just hiding somewhere and will come out once she thinks it's safe. *crosses fingers*

And I'm glad to hear that your parents can at least salvage some stuff, like the clothes. I do hope that they didn't lose any of the important papers, not to mention photos or other mementos!

Another good thing is that they've got a place to stay for now. And that they had insurance!
