Summary: Anticipating the first day on the job is usually worse than the day itself.

Kate sighed in frustration as she glanced at the alarm clock sitting innocently on her nightstand. In a few short hours she would be starting her new job as a criminal investigator. Never in a million years would she have pictured her life going that direction. She had always had her plan and stuck to it right up to being assigned to the President's detail.

Then everything went to hell and she found herself resigning as opposed to being removed to a desk job in some stuffy office. She was a woman of action and when Gibbs made his offer, she couldn't refuse.

It had been six weeks since the shoot out on Air Force One and she had sat through more hearings and almost interrogations than she cared to think about. No one complained when she turned in her resignation, although, there were a few raised eyebrows when they learned she was going to NCIS.

The switch to NCIS didn't take as long as if she had been a new agent. She had already done her time in the federal agent training grounds. However, she had to take a several week course at FLETC specifically for NCIS special agents. She was drilled in military protocol to the point that she was forgetting more than she had learned.

She just hoped that once she started, she would be able to pick things up on the fly. She had seen the way Gibbs operated and figured he wouldn't tolerate someone slowing the team down.

'Of course,' she mused to herself, 'if I don't get any sleep tonight, slowing them down will be the least of my worries.'

It was then that her newly issued cell started buzzing, sending her in a scramble to find it. "Todd," she answered curtly, hoping she sounded awake.

A cheery voice greeted her on the other end and she wondered how DiNozzo could sound so awake at one o'clock in the morning.

"Katie! How's our newest Special Agent?"

"What are you calling me about DiNozzo? " Kate all but growled in the phone. She could hear Tony's smile in response.

"Calling to tell you work is starting a little early for your first day. Got a dead marine at Quantico. You'll have to meet us there."

Kate was up and moving and grabbing the clothes she had laid out before she tried to go to sleep. "Can't I meet you at headquarters and ride there?"

"Not this time. Gibbs is incommunicado tonight, so I have to find our fearless leader. I didn't interrupt anything did I Katie? You sound a little breathless."

Kate paused from trying to dress while juggling the phone. If Tony was this way now, she was scared to think what he would be like when they started working together full time.

"In your dreams, DiNozzo," she said and she heard his laugh as he disconnected.

It was only then that she realized she had no idea where to go and what exactly she would be doing when she got there. Then her phone beeped and she saw the directions to the scene appear from Tony's number.

With a smile, she straightened her skirt and gave herself a quick once-over in the mirror. "You can do this Special Agent Todd," she said for courage, before slipping on her heels and heading for the door.

Kate sighed as she sat down in the chair in Abby's lab. It had been a long day and she found herself disappointed that she hadn't been able to tag along with Gibbs and Tony to make the collar on her first case.

"It's not fair you know," she said out loud and Abby turned her way. "I could just as easily have gone with them, but I'm just a woman."

"I get the distinct impression you've never done this before," Abby said sagely.

"What?" Kate asked. "Sit at home and play housewife while the boys go out to play? I was on the President's detail and like I told Gibbs, I earned my jock strap."

"Gibbs knows that. Tony knows that. But Kate," Abby said as she walked over and rested a hand on her shoulder, "those marines didn't know that. Gibbs knew they would be less likely to slip up with you there. Gibbs can fit in with them and Tony be the green guy who doesn't know up from down. They can get them to talk in that atmosphere."

"It's going to be like this all the time, isn't it? I didn't have this much trouble with the Secret Service."

"Don't worry, Gibbs will let you play too. He has to if he wants to keep Tony on his toes."

Kate smiled at that thought. "So how did DiNozzo get into NCIS? He told me he smiled."

Abby grinned as she walked back over to the test she was running. "Gibbs picked him in Baltimore and couldn't get rid of him. He grows on you like a strange fungus."

"I don't get them. Gibbs is all straight-laced and hardcore and Tony…" Kate trailed off as she tried to sum up Tony's behavior. "Does he take anything serious?"

"Gibbs and Tony are like two peas in a pod." Then Abby rephrased her analogy with, "Make that two peas in separate pods. Tony's pod is all jokes and flirting and movie references while Gibbs' pod growls and smacks people on the head. But when you take away their pods, they're still just two peas. Two tasty peas actually," Abby added with a wink.

"I don't see it Abby," Kate said with a slight headshake as she headed out of the lab.

"Don't worry you will," Abby's voice followed her out the door.

Kate smiled as she headed for the exit. She was exhausted, but she felt accomplished. She had helped bring a killer to justice. She paused in the parking garage as she saw Gibbs and Tony with the killer. For a first day, it wasn't that bad.
  • HEE! The pea pod analogy made my day much happier. :) This is a wonderful little bit of fic.
  • LOL, oh the pod bit was too funny. Great short
  • HA! Great analogy! I liked Abby's little comment about them being 'tasty' peas, too (despite the difficulty I have getting 'vile green blobs' and 'tasty' into the same thought... ;-)
  • Great job getting in Kate's head. I loved it.
    • It's rare for me to venture out of Tony and Gibbs territory. And I still can't believe you didn't find anything wrong on it when you read it.

      :-)
  • Very nice. Your look from Kate's view was great, and I loved how Abby couldn't describe Gibbs and Tony. Lovely.

Sorry for not commenting on this sooner; I was running back through [livejournal.com profile] ncis_fic posts and just now saw it. Good story! :D
    • You scared me...

I've been rereading House of Cards the last few nights (I'm on Book III Chapter 8 right now).

Glad you liked this. It's rare for me to venture out of my comfort zone of Tony and Gibbs, but the idea struck and I couldn't resist.
      • rainne: (NCIS - Abby - Big Eyes)
I am starting to think that you and I have some kind of weird psychic connection.
        • LOL... must be it...

I think I saw one of your other posts yesterday and was like: Hey! I have reread House of Cards lately... I'm up for some Tim/Kate/Tony because I like some good threesomes and I've reread all my favorite Gibbs/Abby/Tony stories last week...

You know... the world needs more Abby/Tony/Tim fics... I've only seen a few of those. And I think yours in the only Tim/Kate/Tony fic I've ever seen.
          • rainne: (NCIS - Kate & McGee & Tony - OT3)
I was rereading HoC myself a week or so ago and thinking I would love to write another TKT, but I'm afraid it would just turn out like HoC again, only not as good :(
            • I could see where it would be hard for you to do a TKT that is separate from HoC. You covered so much ground in that story that it would be hard to do something completely separate from it. You would need something else to bring them together. And probably different dynamics between the three of them to keep the stories separate entities... hmm.... yeah... hard...

In other news, I think my drabble bunny is back with a vengeance because I just had a splat for Tim/Abby/Tony for the current [livejournal.com profile] ncisdrabble100 challenge. :-)
              • rainne: (NCIS - Abby & Kate - Friends)
Good news! :) Now that I'm not working any more, my muse is also back with a vengeance... I have the sequel to Chaos Theory started, and the (third) sequel to The Floods Cannot Drown It, and a whole different slave!Kate story started that's science fiction rather than fantasy. I've got the beginnings of the sequel to Dakota Hearts, although she's not talking about that one yet, and and and.... ^_^

Good thing I'm not working, with all these creative juices flowing. :D
                • So many bunnies, so little time! :-)

I've got a big bunny all outlined waiting for me to sit down and write. NCIS/Highlander (only without the Highlander characters, just using the immortals, watchers and hunters). It will be a four part story and centers around Gibbs and Tony (gen not slash).

And a slave!Kate science fiction story sounds very, very intriguing... And I'm going to have to reread The Floods Cannot Drown It next.... Woe is me. ;-)
                  • rainne: (NCIS - Puff - Kate/Tony)
It could be worse... I'm going to have to rewrite the damn thing. The more I look at it, the worse it is. It needs a LOT of sprucing up before it'll be ready for, well, anything, really.

I read an NCIS/Highlander once where Kate was an immortal, and she came back to life after Ari shot her. Don't know much about Highlander but it was a good story anyway.
                    • I think I read that story too...

Mine will have Tony as the immortal who's been around and will start right after Requiem because Gibbs experienced his first death by drowning.

I hope to have it done in a manner that non-Highlander knowing people can read it and not be out of the loop. I'm not using any characters from the show or movies. I'm using the concept of immortals, the Game (in the end there can be only one), Watchers and the bad Watchers called Hunters.

I think the way I set it up will have those with less Highlander knowledge being able to learn things with Gibbs as he learns about the new world he is part of.

Eep on rewriting. I need to revisit what I started for the Big Bang before I got sick last fall and actually work on finishing it.

And now the storms are almost here (Tornadoes warnings have been around), so off I go to wait them out and then go to bed. :-)
  • *bounces* I'm glad I looked through your comments and responses cause then I would have continued to miss this little bit of lovely. Hee!
    • yay for finding fics!

I had fun with this one. I had that pea in the pod analogy stuck in my head and wanted to get it out.
