Summary: First you take a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes you. - F. Scott Fitzgerald

When he was young, he didn't have a word for it. He just knew that something made his parents act differently than other adults he knew. During the day, his mother would focus on directing the house staff on what decorations she wanted changed. As the day progressed, she would start yelling orders in a shrill voice and then grab him by his shirt collar and force him into a sailor suit. His father wouldn't be around during the day, but in the evenings, Tony would pour his drink and then report his day while still in the sailor suit.

After learning what alcohol did to his parents, he avoided the stuff until he was in college. He had too many memories of the smell of it on his father or his mother as they came too close to him. But on the night of his twenty-first birthday, he couldn't say to no to his frat brothers as they proceeded to pour beer after beer into him. The next morning was hell and he found himself unconsciously making the remedy his father had shown him at the tender age of eight. His frat buddies laughed, but the "DiNozzo Defibrillator" worked.

The first homicide case he worked left him with a bad taste in his mouth. Five-year-old twin girls had been found in a city park. Their bodies had been brutally raped and then cut open. The only place left untouched had been their identical faces framed in pale blonde hair. Two days later, they learned the father was responsible and Tony couldn't remember how long he spent over the toilet in the station until his partner tugged him to his feet. He tried to shrug the man off, but Tony soon found himself at a bar drowning the memory away.

There had been a smile when a gruff NCIS agent tried to take over his case. There had been an even larger smile when the same agent had to come to him to ask for assistance when the case stalled. Tony soon found himself undercover trying to suss out Navy personnel that were working with a local Baltimore drug ring. His own department was short staffed and Special Agent Gibbs was his only backup. He wasn't sure how he was drugged, but he just knew it was the funniest thing ever when Gibbs offered him a job at the hospital.

Boat. Bourbon. Basement. In all honesty, he had understood years ago why Gibbs had those things in his life. They just never talked about it. Gibbs had those things for distraction and Tony settled for smooth curves, sweat and a bed. They were different measures but achieved the same result. But sometimes, Tony found himself needing more than a pretty face he could lose himself in. So that night, Tony found himself walking into Gibbs' house, grabbing an empty glass from the kitchen and heading down the stairs. Gibbs just passed the bottle and sandpaper to him without a word.
  • Ooh, very nice. I love the idea that Tony would find it funny when Gibbs offered him a job in the hospital. He totally would.

    And the ending was awesome.
    • We've seen how Tony is on pain killers... Of course he would find everything funny while doped up on some kind of drug. :-)

      Glad you liked!
      • I wasn't even thinking of that, but yeah that too! I was just thinking that Tony's the sort to go, "I'm such a good cop I landed myself in the hospital. Of *course* I'm the kind of guy you want on your team." :)
        • It was a little bit of both. It was probably like that laugh he had when he found the picture of Kate from the wet t-shirt contest at that bar he was at on his vacation.

And Gibbs is probably feeling guilty along the lines, "it's my fault he almost got killed and the kid is going to get himself killed if I leave him in a place where they can't spare him any backup so I need to give him a job to keep an eye on him and maybe slap on the head every once in awhile."

Of course, all Gibbs actually said was, "You'll do. See yah Monday morning." {insert Tony laughter} "And DiNozzo..." "Yeah, Boss?" "Don't be late." Then he turns around and leaves the hospital room.
  • I love this look into Tony's relationship with alcohol. It's complex and yet decidedly simple at the same time. :-) It's a crutch he doesn't like to use, but understands the need for.

I loved the ending. It is a lovely summary of Gibbs and Tony's relationship. Well done.
    • You just know that Tony has some kind of strong relationship with alcohol. He pretty much said his dad was an alcoholic in Chained and you know if the family hangover remedy has been around that long in the family... well....

I would just once love to see Tony and Gibbs working silently on the boat together. Just once. I think we've only seen Tony in the basement what, two times?
      • pipisafoat: image of virgin mary with baby jesus & text “abstinence doesn’t work" (ncis:tony - working)
I would just once love to see Tony and Gibbs working silently on the boat together. Just once. I think we've only seen Tony in the basement what, two times?
I also really want to know what happened the first time Tony stayed over...

Brilliant look at Tony there, and Gibbs. Loved it! :D *cuddles fic*
        • Thanks!

I've played with the "first time at Gibbs' " scenario a few times in different fics. That's a fun little throwaway line the author left for us fanfic'ers to play with over and over.
  • Wonderful Tony story
  • Wonderful story and really interesting look at what Tony uses to forget and what Gibbs uses to forget. Obviously Tony doesn't want to use alcohol all the time since it appears that both his parents were fond of it but sometimes his usual coping methods aren't enough.
    • Thanks! I like thinking about their coping mechanisms because each of them have something different. McGee writes. Tony acts the fool, has fun and gets laid. Gibbs: boat. bourbon. basement. I'm not sure what Kate's was or Ziva's is though. I'll have to think on that.
      • I think that Kate's coping method would have been drawing. Ziva's coping method is a bit harder to figure out, it could be something as obvious as her cleaning her many weapons or her morning runs or something unexpected like a more feminine activity like cooking.
        • ladyjane: whipped cream and hand-cuffs. "Got Plans?" (Default)
It's canon that Ziva enjoys cooking -- and is good at it.
*chortle* I just hadan image of her cleaning her guns (or practicing her knife throwing) while a roast is in the oven.
          • Yeah, I remembered that after I posted it, other than cooking I don't think Ziva's ever mentioned any semi-feminine activity that she may know or do in her spare time. If cooking was her coping method then I imagined that it would be something akin to how Izzy from Grey's Anatomy baked /cooked when she was upset (I have no idea if she still does it but she did do the baking/cooking thing in the earlier seasons).

Haha, that would totally be awesome if while Ziva has a roast or a souffle in the oven she's cleaning her weapons or pracicing her knife throwing.
            • Haha, that would totally be awesome if while Ziva has a roast or a souffle in the oven she's cleaning her weapons or pracicing her knife throwing.

That would be perfect for her! :-)

And I totally spaced on Kate's drawing. I think that would be a good coping mechanism for her.
  • Very nice. I love the progression of the five separate thoughts, all working together. Lovely.
  • Very nice! I love the image of Tony just silently sanding the boat next to Gibbs. I so wish they'd let us see that on the show! And your version of how Gibbs hired Tony in the first place is perfect. Thanks for sharing!
    • I would love to see Tony sanding the boat on the show. I've been watching Hung Out to Dry for a fic I'm working on and at the beginning Tony is in the basement and runs his hand over a boat rib. I was like... "guh!"

I could see Tony trying to talk to Gibbs after he sobered up from the drugs with a, "Was there a job offer in there somewhere?"
