Summary: An ill-timed accident led to Gibbs receiving wake-up calls from beyond the grave.
It was an ill-timed accident. The case had gone wrong at every turn and Gibbs was taking his frustration out on the new guy, Xander. After ten head slaps, Xander had decided to give Gibbs a dose of his own medicine. Just as Xander’s hand connected with Gibbs’ head, Tony tripped over a cord that McGee had stretched across the bullpen. When the commotion had settled, Xander was found dead with a plasma screen on top of his head. An investigation cleared Gibbs and his team of any wrongdoing, but Xander’s untimely death led to Gibbs never head slapping again.
The first time it happened was a month after Xander’s death. Without head slaps, Gibbs had taken to using insults more and that didn’t work with Tony. Gibbs knew that Tony took every derogatory word to heart, but he couldn’t seem to stop. Just as Tony’s shoulders started to slump, Gibbs’ head jerked forward from an impact to the back of his skull. He whipped around to find nothing but the wall divider behind him. Tony was giving him a curious look, but Gibbs silenced any questions with a glare. “Find me something!” he snapped before stalking toward the elevator.
After that first time, Gibbs would feel a tap to the back of his head anytime he went too far. However, it was three months before he felt one as powerful as the first. On the anniversary of Shannon and Kelly’s deaths, they’d just closed a case involving the death of the wife and young daughter of a Marine. The case brought up memories he had long buried and they overwhelmed him. After one too many drinks, he found himself staring at his gun. The hard slap sent him rushing to the bathroom where he woke up the next morning.
From that night forward, Gibbs found himself talking to thin air when his emotions tried to get the best of him. He was always careful to make sure his “musings” were done out of earshot of his team. He wasn’t sure if Harris was somehow slapping him from beyond the grave, but he didn’t want anyone questioning his mental stability. Evidently, his ghostly wake-up caller had figured this out because he would receive a light tap just before someone got within hearing range. However, unbeknownst to Gibbs, his team had caught on that something hinky was happening with the boss.
“A real exorcism? On Gibbs?” Tony asked incredulously as everyone stared at Abby. Abby was wringing her hands as she paced her lab trying to convince everyone else that “something” had to be haunting Gibbs. Each of them (even Palmer) had seen Gibbs talking to himself from time to time. Also, the way his head would jerk forward like he was receiving a head slap was disconcerting. “Who we going to call to do this Abs? Ghostbusters?” Tony asked just before his own head jerked forward from a slap, only nobody was behind him. “Abby, get us the exorcist now!”

I'm still thinking on the shifter stuff... I'm toying around with some ideas to see if anything really jumps at me.
Poor Gibbs, slapped from beyond the grave, and nothing he could do about it... and now Tony's getting the same treatment. *g* Hope Abby holds off from getting the exorsist for just a little while - yeah I'm cruel, I know.
I think Xander's ghost will complain about an exorcist. That's why it slapped Tony. I think he'll need to get Gibbs involved though.

I think I might do Xander and Kate chatting over things as they watch the team. I have this idea about Kate being shocked that Xander could actually hit Gibbs and Xander pulling a Tony on her and saying, "Didn't you watch Ghost?"

I don't think Tony would make it through with an exorcism. I think Tony was more concerned that Gibbs was talking to himself. Now he has a ghost... and Tony is enterprising when it comes to Gibbs info.... I think he might try to find a way to talk to Xander to get intel on Gibbs. Can we say Ouiji board party? :-)
A reviewer at TTH gave me the little bunny for Kate and Xander talking as ghosts. I thought about having Kate upset when she saw Xander hit Gibbs for the first time. "You can touch them?! I've been stuck watching them for years and haven't been able to do anything like that..."
And Xander would go all Tony on her with, "Didn't you watch Ghost?"
