Summary: You can hear a lot when nobody knows you are listening in.
“If you ask me, it’s good riddance.”
“Soph! She hasn’t even been gone a week!”
“No, but she can’t lord it over us because ‘she married a DiNozzo’ anymore, can she?”
“True. Although I heard she wasn’t going to be a DiNozzo for much longer. According to Georgia, the divorce papers were being drawn up.”
“Probably had to do with her husband sleeping with that twenty-something secretary of his.”
“Do you think he had her killed to keep her from getting any money?”
“Anything is possible. Just a shame about that boy...”
Nine-year-old Tony decided not to listen any more.
“Have you heard what the harlot convinced Mr. DiNozzo to do?”
“As long as it doesn’t involve firing one of us, what does it matter?”
“It’s not us you idiot, but apparently he’s sending little Tony away to a boarding school.”
“What?! The boy won’t survive. It’s all we can do to keep him happy.”
“I almost wonder if it won’t be better for him though. I mean he won’t have to deal with his father anymore.”
Tony stood outside the kitchen door with his forgotten, straight-A report card in hand. He was being sent away from his only family.
“You know what Susanne in records told be the other night?”
“What a lousy fuck you are?”
“Ha! Not quite. More like the fact that the captain’s little pretty boy DiNozzo has a rich daddy.”
“Really? The little prick comes from money? No wonder he’s moving up the ranks fast.”
“Yeah. His daddy’s worth millions. He’s probably banking on getting his son set up as commissioner where his business is.”
“So DiNozzo has daddy pushing him up the ladder and we’re left in the dust looking like idiots…”
Tony turned away, writing his resignation in his head. Baltimore sounded good.
“Damn it! Why the hell would you fire him when he did his damn job?!”
“His job was to do as he was told, Agent Gibbs. Working with you was not what he was told to do.”
“And working your way would have led to more dead instead of the three this case ended with. For the record, you will not put a reprimand in his file.”
“Why should I listen to you?”
“Because, Captain, I can make your life a living hell.”
“Why do you care?”
“Because, he’s mine now and I take care of my people.”
Tony smiled.
“Why haven’t you said anything to the boy, Jethro? He risked his own life to save yours and Ms. Tyler’s and you haven’t even said thank you.”
“Don’t need to tell him thank you, Duck. Plus, I don’t have a clue what to say to him. Thank you wouldn’t be enough.”
“Everyone is saying that he was stupid for diving in that water like that. He’s probably heard the rumors.”
“And rumors are all they are. Tony’s a braver man than I’ll ever be. He doesn’t need me telling him that.”
Tony was frozen with shock in the bathroom stall.
