Summary: She asked a simple question, but there wasn't a simple answer.
Ziva or Kate. He never would have thought about them like that had it not been for Abby. On the first anniversary of her death as they finished off the bottle of bourbon in Gibbs’ basement while watching the older man chip away and a piece of wood, she had asked him.
“Which do, make that did, no do you prefer Tony?” she asked with a slight slur that had Tony wondering how drunk she was. “Ziva or Kate? You gotta be honest you know. Gibbs will know if you’ve been lying. Gibbs knows everything.”
Tony cast a glance over at their boss who remained studiously involved in his project even though Tony knew the man heard every word. He wouldn’t get any help from that corner.
“Maybe we should put the bourbon away and hit the sack Abs. Got a stickler for a boss who likes us alert at work in the morning.”
“I’m not as think as you drunk I am,” Abby said before she stopped and replayed the words in her head. “Tell me and then we can go to bed. Bed with Tony,” she added with a giggle.
“You get the bed, I get the couch and Gibbs has the boat. And I can’t tell you.”
“Why can’t you tell me?”
Tony managed to get Abby to her feet and started toward the stairs. Gibbs finally looked up and gave him a measuring look which Tony returned with a “yes, I’ll get her taken care of Boss,” meaning.
“Can’t tell you if I don’t know,” he replied as they made their way upstairs.
At the top Abby all but fainted and he carried her to the spare bedroom and laid her down. He got her situated and the covers over her before giving her a kiss as he smoothed her hair from her face.
“Can’t tell you because I don’t want to hurt either one of their feelings, Abs. Kate would come down from heaven and kick my ass while Ziva picked one of a hundred ways to kill me with her pinky finger. Can’t compare the two.”
Abby’s eyes fluttered opened briefly as she smiled at him. “Chicken,” she half mumbled as she fell back to sleep.
“That’s between you, me, Kate if she’s listening and Gibbs,” he said with a half smile as leaned down for one more kiss before turning and walking past Gibbs standing in the open door.
“Smart choice DiNozzo,” Gibbs said quietly as he followed his agent to the waiting pot of coffee they both needed.
