Summary: I could only see the end, but Gibbs saw something different.
Gibbs had stayed in Jen- no, Vance’s office so I took the opportunity to slip away while McGee was heading for Abby’s lab and Ziva was using the phone to call in some favors. I knew it was coming; had known since the whole Le Grounille mess went to hell in a hand basket. I screwed up and it cost a case with an arms dealer and the heart of an innocent woman. I screwed up this time and it cost Jenny her life. Now I have a choice to make, leave on Vance’s terms or my own. It’s over.
When I got to my apartment, I sunk on my couch and stared mindlessly at the place I had lived in for seven years. Outside of the boarding school, it was the longest I had ever stayed in one place in my life. Now I was being forced to leave, forced to lose everything. Then again, the looks that Gibbs had given me since he arrived at that diner made me think I had lost everything before Vance’s announcement. Perhaps it was best to cut ties completely and get out. No one would miss me if I just slipped away.
It was a testament to how far out of it I was that I didn’t register Gibbs standing beside the couch until I felt the slap to my head. I couldn’t bring myself to look him in the eye. I didn’t want to see the disappointment written on his face. Not only had I screwed up, but now I was running away from my mistakes. I felt a finger tipping my chin up and I didn’t have the strength the fight it. When our eyes met, I didn’t know what to make of the look. “I think I’ll just quit.”
The expected slap didn’t come. Instead I was greeted with a hand sliding through my hair and coming to rest on the back of the neck. It grounded me in a way that I hadn’t felt grounded since that explosion on the boat. “You’re not quitting, DiNozzo. You don’t quit my team.” I almost laughed, as I pointed out, “Not on your team anymore, Boss, or did you miss that part?” Gibbs just smiled and pulled me in for a hug. “You’re on my team until I say otherwise and no wanna-be director can do a thing to stop us.”
“But he signs the paperwork and last I checked they don’t send two senior agents afloat on the same ship.” I trembled as I felt Gibbs’ mouth trace down my neck and along my jaw line. “Especially if said agents are male and sleeping together,” I added quietly as Gibbs brought his mouth to meet mine. I was lost in the sensations that Gibbs provided and welcomed every touch. Sometime later, lying in bed with Gibbs’ arms wrapped around me, I heard his low voice. “It’s not over Tony, not by a long shot. I’ll put an end to Vance.”
