Summary: Gibbs searches for an answer Tony doesn't want to provide.
“What happened, Tony?”
“Nothing, Boss,” he responded out of habit. Then Tony’s body shivered as he felt the calloused hand trace over the puckered skin on his arm.
“This is not nothing, DiNozzo,” Gibbs’ voice picked up a notch as his finger continued to trace the small line down and then back up, sending a tingling sensation through Tony’s body.
“What happened?” was asked again and Tony sighed because he knew the older man wouldn’t give up until he had an answer. Tony just wasn’t sure how Gibbs would take the answer he received.
“It’s just a memory, Gibbs.”
“Memories don’t generally leave marks,” Gibbs said shortly. “When did this memory happen?”
“My twelfth birthday,” Tony said after a moment. He turned his back to Gibbs so he wouldn’t have to face him as he talked. “My father was usually too drunk to notice me.”
The hand on his arm stilled and Tony held his breath. ‘This is why I never talk about it,’ he thought vehemently. ‘Gibbs won’t want to deal with the baggage. Nobody does.’
Then strong arms wrapping around him and pulling him close tore him from his thoughts.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Gibbs steady voice was like an anchor to Tony.
“Would you accept it if I said no?” Tony asked quietly.
“Yeah,” Gibbs breathed softly into his ear. “Only if you want to.”
Tony’s mind was awhirl with the choice he had been given. Usually Gibbs would demand an answer and now he had a choice. He was lost with what to do.
“Can I take a rain check on that, Gibbs?” he asked softly.
“Whenever you want, Tony,” Gibbs said as he placed a kiss to the scar. “How about I give you a new memory?”
“Sounds like a plan, Boss.”
