With the case solved, New Year’s Eve passed with ease. Abby had even succeeded in doing the impossible; she had convinced Gibbs to let her use his house for a New Year’s party. Tony was still in shock as everyone started to gather in the house.
Ducky had arrived first, bringing a bottle champagne that was to be used at the stroke of midnight. Tony smiled as he watched Ducky and Gibbs’ dad talk like old friends. It was comforting in a way to see something that resembled those idyllic families with the older patriarchs chatting about the years gone by.
Jimmy Palmer showed up next with a nervous knock and a bowl of Chex Mix. Tony was surprised he’d actually ventured to Gibbs’ house. He’d spent around thirty minutes that day trying to talk his young friend into coming. The key was telling him it was a team thing and that it would jinx things if the full team wasn’t present.
While Jack was getting to know the last team member he’d yet to meet, Tony saw McGee slip inside the door without a knock. Tony had to admit that the fresh-faced Probie they’d picked up from Norfolk had come a long way. He was proud, although he’d never tell McGee.
“Can you believe Abby pulled this off?” McGee asked quietly as he got closer to Tony.
“She’s Abby. Not even Gibbs is immune to her charms.”
“Evidently. Where’s she at anyway?”
“Walking through the door,” Gibbs said as he moved passed the two to help Abby with her burden of chips, drinks and other mysterious containers.
Ziva trailed in behind her and Tony felt that everything was in place. He was together with his makeshift family to celebrate the arrival of a new year. Nothing could go wrong.
Throughout the night, Tony had noticed little moments pass between Abby, Ducky and Jack. It was almost like they were up to something, but for the life of him, Tony didn’t know what.
Drinks were passed around, chips and dip were devoured and boxes of pizza arrived around nine. Then Abby suggested games.
Tony was amazed at how charades could turn out when it involved the entire team and Gibbs’ dad. Things had degraded passed the gutter at one point leaving everyone rolling with laughter, even Gibbs.
Tony had to admit that he was in love with Gibbs’ laugh. It was a rare occurrence and to see the boss being so open around them was a novel experience. Tony was committing every minute of the night to his memory. He’d keep a hold of it and recall it on days things were tough.
“It’s almost time!” Abby’s shout interrupted his thoughts.
Soon, they all gathered with glasses of champagne and had the live show from New York streaming on McGee’s laptop. Tony only gave a brief moment of thought to wonder how he was getting internet before Abby squealed again.
“Mistletoe!” Abby was saying at pointing to a spot directly over Tony and Gibbs.
“Mistletoe?” both Gibbs and Tony asked as they looked up. Gibbs continued, “I don’t have any damn mistletoe in my house.”
“And mistletoe is only for Christmas anyway,” Tony added with a nervous shuffle.
“Nonsense,” Abby intoned. “Mistletoe is good for whenever you’re under it and you two are under it. So where’s the kiss?”
Tony glanced around the room and everyone was watching. Jimmy looked like he wanted to melt through the floor. McGee and Ziva were watching with speculation and an intrigue that made Tony nervous. Abby, Ducky and Jack all had similar smirks of approval and Tony realized they’d been set up. He was going to kill Abby as soon as he was out of this situation.
“It’s not like they can tie in place here, Boss,” Tony broke the silence.
“Don’t bet on it, DiNozzo,” Gibbs said with a head nudge toward Abby.
“Seven minutes!” And everyone diverted their attention momentarily and Tony found himself looking at Gibbs.
Tony couldn’t decipher the expression that was visible in Gibbs’ normally cloaked eyes.
“Tony.”
“Boss.”
And then they were kissing and Tony wasn’t aware of anything, not even the ball dropping on the screen.
