Summary: Tony needs to get away from it all, but it doesn't work the way he wants.
Dear Dad,
When did you start writing Tony?
We had a difficult case this week, especially for Tony. Turned out the wrong guy was put behind bars 3 years ago in a case Tony had the lead. He took it hard.
He started talking the other night about getting away for a few days. Stillwater came up.
I don’t believe in coincidences.
-Jethro
Son,
Shannon took the initiative with me when it came to talking. That’s one area Tony isn’t like her. The kid seems to think he doesn’t have to right to talk to me no matter what I tell him. Somebody messed the boy up. Do you know who?
Since he didn’t start talking, I did. Probably shocked the hell out of him when he got that first letter. I told him he was always welcome. Also told him to drag you up this direction.
It probably took a lot for him to make that suggestion, so don’t you go making him feel bad. And with the job you both do, you need a break. I knew men in the mines who never stopped because they needed the money to take care of their families. They worked themselves to an early grave. It’s why me and LJ started the store. We didn’t want our families to lose us to that damn mine.
If you don’t believe in coincidences, then think about why Tony asked to go somewhere. He needs it and you probably do too.
Get your head out of your ass son and listen to your partner.
Jack
Tony,
My son is a stubborn ass. He got a healthy dose from both me and his momma. And LJ, the man I named him after, didn’t help any.
When he was a kid, we’d fight tooth and nail over the smallest things. I remember this one time he wanted to go with the other boys out to this quarry pond. I knew how deep the thing was and told him no. Next day, I got a call from the hospital. The fool boy had gone anyway and ended up breaking his leg on a shallow jump.
Anyway, you probably know as well as I do about how hard it is to get him to do something he doesn’t feel he should. Just keep working at him.
And I don't know where he picked up that head slap habit you told me about, but one day you should slap him back. He needs a wake-up call as much as the next person.
Take care of yourself Tony…
Jack
Dear Jack,
Never in a million years would I slap the man, even if he needed it. There's been several times over the years where he's needed it. This one time he went undercover to draw out a sniper and didn’t wear his damn vest. And, I probably shouldn't be telling you this, but he went off grid once (well more than once, but this one stands out in my mind) and ended up driving a car with him and a childhood friend of Kelly's off a pier and into the water.
If I hadn't of tracked him down and got there just in time to see the car go off… I had to pull both of them out. Did CPR and everything. I don't know what brought Gibbs back, but it sure as hell wasn't me. He really needed one then, but it's hard with him. At work, he's the boss and it just kind of carries over outside of work too.
Sorry about rambling. At least I'm not quoting movies to you. Everyone at work gets annoyed by that.
We may not have come to Stillwater, but Gibbs did take me somewhere. It was for a case of course. We ended up in Arizona. Of course I don't know how much of a 'vacation' it was what with the horses and camping and gunfight.
He'll probably never go for a trip together to Stillwater much as I hate to say it. The only time he has willingly taking time from work was when he retired to Mexico a few years back. And you didn't see his face the night I mentioned it.
I'm probably pushing my luck writing to you.
Anyway, take care of yourself too, Jack.
-Tony
Dear Dad,
It's taken years of hard work on my part to get Tony to where he is. He's never told me but I have my suspicions. And for the record I don't "try" to make Tony feel bad. He knows I'm a bastard and has dealt with me for years.
His suggestion shocked the hell out of me. He caught me off guard and I'm not used to that happening.
I'm not saying we won't ever come for a visit. It's just hard right now. There's some things in motion, politics. I hate it, but we have to keep a low profile right now and us heading off somewhere together is not keeping a low profile.
I tried to get us some time on this trip to Arizona, but it wasn't the best situation. Once things cool down, I'll try to work something out.
Something big is coming and I need to be ready for it. So does Tony.
-Jethro
Leroy,
Watch yourself and Tony. I don't want to be seeing either of you in some hospital or, heaven forbid, a funeral.
And I'll hold you to getting both of you up here when whatever this is blows over.
Is that understood son?
Dad
Tony,
Leroy made a promise to me, and I'll make sure he keeps it, come hell or high water. Also, how many other times has my son almost gotten himself killed? If he does something like that again, you have my permission to smack him hard and if he says anything, you let me handle him.
What kind of movies do you enjoy? I'm a movieaficia buff myself. Maybe we can trade favorites sometime.
Jack
